Abstract
The word stress refers to the state generated by the perception of stimuli that provoke emotional agitation, increasing the production of adrenaline resulting in several systemic manifestations. Periodontal disease is defined as a chronic inflammatory disease that acts directly on the tissues that support and support the teeth. Psychological stress is present in the relationship with periodontal disease, as risk indicators. Based on the idea that the immune response is compromised by stressors, causing infections and periodontal destruction. In this perspective, the study sought to answer the following problem: How has the literature contemplated the relationship between stressful activities and periodontal disease? In this context, the study aims to review in the literature how the relationship between stress and periodontal disease has been contemplated and as specific objectives to characterize the articles in the databases regarding the year and place of publication, to identify the psychological stress factors that interferes with the evolution of periodontal diseases by checking the impact of non-surgical periodontal therapy considering the levels of stress hormones. The work carried out consists of an integrative literature review, where the bibliographic research was carried out in the electronic databases PubMed and VHL, with text in Portuguese and English, available, and indexed in the selected databases, having the period of time as 2014 to 2019. “Psychological stress”, “Periodontal diseases”, “gingivitis”, “Periodontal Diseases”, “Stress, Psychological”, and “Gingivitis” were used as descriptors.
